The 10 sample cards
- Applied behavior analysis (ABA) (A)
The science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior, and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for the change.
Often confused with: Experimental analysis of behaviorReport a problem with this card
- Behavior (B)
The activity of living organisms; an interaction between an organism and its environment that involves movement of some part of the organism and produces a measurable change in the environment. Something a dead person could do (e.g., 'being quiet') fails the dead man's test and is not behavior.

- Duration (C)
The total amount of time from the onset to the end of a response, reported per occurrence or as total time during a session.Report a problem with this card
- Independent variable (D)

- Functional behavior assessment (FBA) (F)
A systematic process for identifying the antecedents and consequences that reliably predict and maintain problem behavior, using indirect, descriptive, and/or experimental (functional analysis) methods.

- Shaping (G)
Differential reinforcement of successive approximations toward a terminal behavior, reinforcing each closer approximation and placing earlier ones on extinction.
Often confused with: ChainingReport a problem with this card
- Consequence-based intervention (H)
An intervention that changes what happens after behavior, such as reinforcement, extinction, or punishment procedures.
Often confused with: Antecedent interventionReport a problem with this card
- Performance feedback (I)
Information provided to a staff member or trainee about their performance, usually describing what was done correctly and what to change, delivered as soon as practical after performance.Report a problem with this card
- Radical behaviorism (A)
Skinner's philosophy of the science of behavior, which treats private events such as thinking and feeling as behavior subject to the same principles as public behavior, and rejects mentalistic explanations.
