H.2 · Choosing the right intervention

The plan with the most research behind it isn't always the right one for your client. Let's look at how BCBAs weigh assessment data, evidence, preferences, and real-world fit to pick an intervention that actually gets carried out.

Key takeaway
Pick an intervention by weighing four things together: assessment results (especially function), scientific evidence, client and stakeholder preferences, and contextual fit (implementer skills, culture, resources). A plan that's strong on paper but that the real caregivers can't or won't carry out is not the best recommendation. Under the 2022 Ethics Code, Standard 2.14 is the one that governs selecting interventions.
