C.2 · Direct, indirect and product measures

A rating scale, a stack of finished worksheets, and a tally sheet all give you numbers. Only one of them comes from watching the behavior as it happens. Let's sort out which is which, because this distinction is core to the test content outline.

Key takeaway
Direct measurement records the behavior while it happens. Indirect measurement relies on someone's report about the behavior, such as an interview, a rating scale, or a questionnaire filled out from memory. Product measurement counts a tangible result the behavior leaves behind, and you can score it after the behavior is over. A completed rating form is a product of the rater's behavior, not the client's, so it's still an indirect measure.
