B.14 · Stimulus vs. response generalization

You taught one behavior, and now you're seeing it in places, or in forms, you never trained. That's generalization. The question is what spread, and that's what we're sorting out today.

Key takeaway
Ask what's new. If the learner does the same trained response with a new, untrained stimulus or in a new setting, that's stimulus generalization. If the learner does a new response form that does the same job as the trained one, that's response generalization. A new place by itself never makes it response generalization.
