BCBA exam day: a practical guide

You've done the studying. This guide covers the practical side: scheduling, what to bring, pacing, and what happens when you finish. Knowing the logistics ahead of time removes one source of stress.

ABA Exam Coach is an independent study site, not affiliated with or endorsed by the BACB. The rules below come from the BACB's published handbook and examination pages, linked at the end. Always check your Pearson VUE confirmation email and your BACB portal account for the details that apply to you.

Scheduling: where and how you test

Tip: Pearson VUE's BACB testing page offers a demo test and an online test-center tour.

The night before

ID and arrival

Arrive about 30 minutes early. Check-in includes ID verification, agreeing to testing center rules, a palm vein scan, and a digital photo. Check-in is conducted in English.

If you arrive more than 30 minutes late, you'll be turned away and lose your appointment fee.

Your ID must: - Be government-issued and original (no photocopies or digital IDs) - Show your first and last name exactly as they appear in your BACB portal account - Include your signature and a recognizable photo - Be current (not expired)

Examples include a passport, driver's license, military ID, national/state ID card, or permanent resident card. A name mismatch or invalid ID means you can't test, and your fees are forfeited. If your name has changed, update it with the BACB well before exam day.

What you can bring into the room: only your ID and your locker key. Phones, watches, notes, bags, food, and drinks go in the locker. The test center provides a dry-erase board, earplugs on request, and at some centers noise-canceling headphones.

Pacing: 185 questions in 4 hours

The exam has 185 multiple-choice questions (175 scored and 10 unscored, which you can't tell apart) and 4 hours total. Each question has four options and one correct answer, and all questions are weighted equally.

Note that the 4 hours also includes reading the terms and conditions and the navigation tutorial, so your actual question time is a little less.

The math: 240 minutes ÷ 185 questions ≈ 78 seconds per question. Plan for a bit faster than that so you have review time at the end.

Suggested checkpoints (adjust to your own practice data):

Time elapsed Aim to be at about
1 hour Question 50
2 hours Question 100
3 hours Question 150
~3 h 35 min Done with first pass; review flagged items

If you're behind at a checkpoint, don't panic. On the next few hard questions, make your best choice, flag, and move on. Every question is worth the same.

Flagging and review

Reading the stem carefully

Many points are lost to misreading, not to missing knowledge.

Breaks

A short break around the halfway point can help focus in the second half if it fits your pacing plan. Practice it during full-length mocks.

A word on confidentiality

The BACB's terms permanently prohibit sharing exam content in any form, including posting it or reconstructing questions for study groups or online sites. Violations can lead to invalidated results and bans from future testing. Afterward, talk about how you felt, not what was on it.

After the exam

Whatever the result, give yourself the rest of the day off. You've earned it.
